Five Possible Bugs Facing the New iPhone 4

Author: admin

The new iPhone 4 isn’t perfect. It’s a very good handheld computer, beautifully designed, with many powers. But it isn’t perfect. And a few days after launch, it’s clear that the device has some rough edges, which Apple is rumored to be working on smoothing out.
These troubles are magnified because it’s an iPhone. Lots of phones have issues like the ones I’m listing below, but you don’t hear nearly as much about them.
To a large extent, Apple has nobody but itself to blame for expectations of perfection. Steve Jobs and the Apple PR team like to maintain a fiction that their gadgets are without peer or flaw. Add to this a consumer and fan boy press that reacts to any Apple product the way my four-year-old daughter reacts to ponies, and you have pretty unrealistic expectations of a modern consumer electronics product.
Here are the top five complaints we’re hearing about the new iPhone 4. Please go ahead and add yours in the comments section:
Lousy Reception: The “iPhone Death Grip” is well-documented at this point, but many phones lose at least some signal when you cover their antennas. Engadget has been running photos from Nokia manuals, which warn against covering antennas, and PCMag Reviews Editor Dan Costa can do a pretty good “death grip” on his Palm Pre. The iPhone’s main problem seems to be that it just doesn’t get great reception anyway. iPhones never have. It hasn’t stopped people from buying them, but cellular RF design has been a long-term struggle for Apple.
Running Hot: This could be related to the reception issues. My iPhone has been clearly churning its radio to try to get better connections, resulting in a rather warm device. The iPhone seems to use its entire glass back as a heat sink, as well. A firmware update could improve this situation by instructing the iPhone to use its radio more efficiently.
Burning Through Battery: While the iPhone 4 has perfectly good continuous talk time results for a 3G mobile phone – at 6 hours 14 minutes, it’s in the middle of the pack – I’ve seen the battery run down after 13 hours of moderate use on some days. Now, before you go nuts, I’ve had the same thing happen with both a Sprint HTC EVO 4G and an iPhone 3GS. But I can’t help but think that this particular situation has something to do with those signal issues above, and that this could be helped by a firmware update as well.
Perilous Proximity Sensor: This one I haven’t seen personally, but I’ve helped some readers through it. Apparently, if you restore the iPhone 4 from a backup of an earlier iPhone model, it can make the phone’s proximity sensor a bit wobbly. As a result, you hang up on calls with your cheek. The solution seems to be to set up the iPhone 4 in iTunes as a new phone, which I did from the start (and thus I didn’t have the proximity sensor problem.)
Screen Screw-Ups: Reports of yellow spots on screens have been spreading through the Internet. Sometimes they go away with time; sometimes they don’t. One thing we do know is that no other major consumer electronics product uses 3.5-inch, 960-by-640 IPS LCD screens, so Apple is innovating out on its own with the iPhone’s new screen – and typically, with a new screen technology comes a higher error rate until the technology becomes more commoditized.

Apple’s iPhone 4 Launch: as Sloppy as it was Successful

Author: admin

Apple is crowing about a record 1.7 million iPhones sold over the first three days of the device’s June 24 debut, but the rollout may also be setting another unofficial record for company carelessness–a rare flub from a tech firm renowned for its meticulous attention to detail.
Reports abound of numerous iPhone 4-related snafus, including a signal glitch where the new phone’s much-hyped external antenna is subject to human interference when a user covers the iPhone’s lower left corner with a hand.
Apple’s response? Don’t hold the phone that way. As my PCWorld colleague Jared Newman points out, that dismissive attitude is far from the consumer-friendly Apple we’ve come to expect.
And then there are reports of discolored iPhone 4 screens with yellow blotches, and handsets with reversed volume buttons where the – key is below the +. Colleague Melissa J. Perenson points the proximity sensor on the iPhone 4 has a nasty habit of putting private calls onto the phone’s speaker phone. Add to that gripes from iPhone 4 users about bugs in the new Face Time video chat program, including crashes that aren’t even resolved by a phone reboot, and you’ve got a Smartphone that seems not ready for prime time.
Who knows, perhaps iPhone 4 was a rush job, a product pushed to market before all of its kinks were ironed out. If true, it would raise questions as to whether Apple’s impatience was related to the recent “lost iPhone” fiasco, in which tech blog Gizmodo bought a preproduction iPhone 4 and posted an in-depth preview against Apple’s wishes. After all, by the time Steve Jobs debuted the new iPhone during his WWDC keynote this month, Apple’s competitors already knew the ins and out of the gadget.
Too Much Success?
I only hope Apple isn’t getting too cocky or complacent. Being on top of the tech world can do that to a company–just ask Microsoft, which now finds itself scrambling to catch up in a market dominated by mobile devices.
Apple has other problem areas too. Its iOS4 launch, for instance, is generating its own controversies. Users upgrading their iPhones and iPod touches are complaining that the multitasking feature in iOS4, the latest OS for the Apple’s mobile devices, is cutting their battery life dramatically. Some iPhone owners are griping that the new iOS4 multitasking is awful. And if you want to rip DVDs or convert videos to iPhone 4, DVD to iPhone 4 Suite is a so nice choice. And Apple has acknowledged that memory issues may cause some iPhone and iPod touch apps to close unexpectedly.
Certainly, new hardware and software will have their growing pains, and Apple is addressing its iPhone 4 and iOS4 woes. But is the company getting a pass here? I’ll bet that other big-name tech companies would be hammered mercilessly if they launched a product with the number of glitches bedeviling the iPhone 4. But with Apple, there’s a collective shrug.
Given its mostly stellar track record, perhaps Apple has earned a pass this time. Then again, I wouldn’t be as understanding if I couldn’t get a decent cell signal on my brand new $200 iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 or Droid X: The Battle Rages On

Author: admin

iPhone 4 or Droid X: The Battle Rages On – The iPhone 4 and Droid X are two of the hottest mobile devices on the market today. With the iPhone 4 hitting the market Motorola and Verizon, who do not currently have the iPhone, announced their upcoming Droid releases. By all accounts, the Droid X appears to be a direct competitor to the iPhone 4, which received 600,000 preorders almost immediately after the site went live.
The operating systems on both devices receive a thumbs up from most experts. The iOS4 has garnered a lot of attention in recent weeks, because the update will be rolling out to older iPhone models as well. Google Android has many of the features that were contained in the iOS4 update including multi-tasking and extensive app stores.

Currently, Apple’s app store contains over 200,000 apps, while Android’s app store only contains 70,000 apps. Both phones have excellent displays. While the Droid X may have a bigger screen (4.3 inches vs. the iPhone 4’s 3.5 inch screen) the display is definitely more clear and crisp on the new iPhone. The iPhone 4 will also contain technology that allows the device to be more visible in sunlight and other bright areas.
The processors in both phones are almost exactly the same, as both phones contain a 1GHz chip. 1GHz is actually very fast for the amount of computing that a smart phone is usually asked to do on a daily basis.
The networks are where the phones will stand apart. While AT&T is known for their dropped calls and poor management of the iPhone traffic, they have improved their signal in recent months. The Droid X will be available on the Verizon network, which many consider to be the best network that is currently available.

Apple’s Iphone 4 will trounce its Ipad?

Author: admin

AS APPLE’S DEAR LEADER Steve Jobs presented his latest creation, Ipad owners were left in no doubt that their desire to own shiny toys had resulted in several hundred pounds being thrown down the drain.

The fourth Iphone is the most important for the fruit themed toymaker as it faces competition like never before, thanks to devices running Google’s open source Android operating system. A number of reports show that Android smartphones are taking market share away from the Iphone. Jobs’ riposte was predictablly to create a device that looks better than the competition.

Given the firm’s emphasis on design and engineering, looking at the Iphone 4 makes you wonder if Apple’s lead designer, Jonathan Ive, realised that the Ipad is a useless device and thought it wasn’t worth applying his considerable design skills on.

Ignoring the superfluous claims made by Jobs that the Iphone 4 is the “thinnest smartphone on the planet” and that it is covered with glass that is “30 times harder than plastic”, it still manages to combine impressive engineering with attractive design.

It is perhaps surprising that Jobs used the Ipad as a benchmark for the Iphone 4, because in doing so he highlighted the less than impressive Ipad. Given that the Iphone 4 has the same processor as the Ipad and the same in-plane switching (IPS) screen technology, physically the only real difference is in the screen’s dimensions, and even there Jobs did a bang-up job of putting down the Ipad.

Jobs’ claim that the Iphone 4 has 78 per cent of the pixels on an Ipad is pretty impressive when you consider that Iphone’s physical screen size is only 36 per cent that of the Ipad. This, as Jobs pointed out, results in the pixel density shooting up, leading to a ‘richer’ picture. One hopes that Jobs’ lead on this will force other manufacturers to pay greater attention on this often overlooked performance metric.

Apple’s dear leader was at his best when trying to describe why cameras on mobile phones are utterly rubbish in low light situations. Using some meaningless pixel size metric to justify what technologically challenged fanbois might see as a minor jump in megapixels, Jobs also mentioned that the Iphone’s sensor has its backside illuminated.

The reason why cameras on phones are poor in low light conditions has nothing to do with what shines out of Jobs’ sensor but rather the tiny lens in front of the sensor which is simply unable to gather enough light with the fast shutter speeds employed to reduce blur due to shaking hands. It doesn’t take David Bailey to realise that wide aperture lenses have glass of large diameter, but no, lets stick with pixel size and backside illumination to justify poor performance.

Then there’s the inclusion of not one but two cameras. It’s understandable that given the Ipad’s cumbersome size and weight, even the most fervent fanboi would be unwilling to hold it aloft as some oversized large-format camera. However the front facing camera would be extremely useful when using the Ipad with applications such as Cisco’s Webex video conferencing tool.

In the past Apple has declined to include a camera in products such as Ipods blaming space constraints, yet the firm managed to stick two cameras in a device that Jobs claimed was “packed to the gills”. With Ipad tear-downs showing plenty of space, it’s clear that the firm wants to introduce a camera as some sort of revolutionary feature to milk fanbois for their hard earned cash next year.

Jobs put on a song and dance about the inclusion of a gyroscope in the Iphone 4, further diminishing any difference between the Iphone and the Ipad. It’s not that the Iphone shouldn’t have a gyroscope, but given that Jobs also announced the Ibooks for the Ipad one starts to wonder why anyone would want to purchase a machine that does the same for user mobility as a ball and chain.

Apple fanbois like to claim that competitors rip-off their church when it comes to ideas, but the Iphone’s dual microphone noise cancellation technology was first found on Google’s Nexus One. How many fanbois will admit that their god wasn’t able to create this truly helpful technology, instead nabbing it from a manufacturer that it is currently suing for alleged patent infringement.

Apple’s Iphone 4 with its revolutionary bleeding edge operating system shows that Jobs’ Mob knows its target audience and what they want. The latest Iphone has the looks and even the hardware but the software, despite running Iphone OS 4, will still be behind that of Google’s Android. Google has taken an aggressive updating strategy with Android and while it might cause fragmentation between devices, it does mean that features arrive there long before they do on the Iphone OS.

Much has been written regarding the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem, however Apple is about to indulge in much of the same, giving Ipad users access to Iphone OS 4 this Autumn, several months after select Iphone users get their mitts on it. Jobs wants to force punters to buy his latest device by crippling the functionality of Iphone OS 4 on older generation devices, but that should be of no surprise to any follower of the church.

Then there’s Android 2.2. The latest version of the Android operating system not only shows up Jobs’ Iphone OS but offers functionality that not only casual users will appreciate such as Adobe’s Flash but also features that hardcore technophiles will be happy with, such as easy-as-you-like USB and wireless tethering. Considering Jobs’ partnering policies with mobile operators, Apple users can forget such options, unless they pony up the dosh.

If anyone needed proof that the Ipad really is just a fancy way of making users pay over the odds for content that has been freely available on other devices, the Iphone is it. In all likelihood Jobs would have hoped to wait a bit longer to milk Ipad buyers before launching the Iphone 4, but given the competition the firm faced from Android, it ran out of time.

Apple’s fourth Iphone is technically the most impressive mobile device it has launched. It won’t have the same impact as the second generation unit that brought with it the App Store, but it will help Apple in its losing fight with Android. The problem for Jobs is that it has also shown up the Ipad for the device that it really is, an oversized Iphone without a phone.

White iPhone 4 Not Available at Launch, Pre-orders Cancelled

Author: admin

Confirmed: the iPhone 4 will not be available in white on launch day. In fact, customers who had pre-ordered the white version of Apple’s latest creation were notified by Best Buy that the device will not ship due to manufacturing delays. Other customers have received notification from Apple or AT&T that their pre-orders have been cancelled due to overwhelming demand and website processing errors.

The white iPhone 4 specifically has been a source of rampant speculation ever since the device was demoed at WWDC after Steve Jobs’ keynote speech. Apple initially announced that both the white and black models would be available on launch day June 24.

This is clearly not the case, and Apple has been reluctant to show off the white iPhone 4 in its promotional materials. In nearly all of the press and gallery images, advertising and other information, Apple is focusing sharply on the black model, leaving mystery surrounding the white version.

Rumors were even floated that the white iPhone 4 was actually delayed because it was going to be a Verizon Wireless CDMA model. Interesting concept, but when was the last time a smartphone manufacturer separated its products by color for different carriers? Can we expect a purple iPhone 4 for T-Mobile and a green model on Sprint? Incredibly unlikely.

As Apple processes the 600k+ orders it has already received, the iPhone 4 becomes something of a rarity until demand can be met. This becomes even more true for the white iPhone 4, since no amount of time waiting in line next week will yield a white phone. Those who like the white model or believe it sets them apart from the crowd will have to postpone their upgrade plans.

Both the iPhone 3G and 3GS models were available in white, although the front bezel was still black. The iPhone 4 features glass on the front and back, and the white model has a white bezel surrounding the screen for the first time. Both the white and black models feature a stainless steel edge around the sides.
